For about a week now, I’ve had the urge to paint a big, bold Barn Owl. Last night, we saw a Super Blue Moon and I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it, but I sat and painted exactly that! A Big Bold Barn Owl.

I had every intention of taking progress shots of ‘work in progress’ but I became so absorbed in the painting, I completely forgot. It was just what I needed to do – I enjoyed every minute of it and I’m really happy with the finished painting too! It was great to let loose with big brushes and not worry about detail or being careful. A complete antidote to my delicate feather paintings that I’ve been working on recently.

This Barn Owl is painted in acrylics on board, 16″ x 12″, In my mind’s eye, I’d invisaged a much larger piece, but last night, this was the biggest board I could find. I think as soon as I can find a bigger board, I’ll give it a go, and GO HUGE!!!

Here she is, I think I’ll call her ‘Luna’ – I hope you like her. You can see in the 2nd picture a comparison of the brushes I normally use for my feather painting and the brushes I used for this – quite a difference! Feather shown is a work in progress, Silver Goshawk.
